Open road for boro-only cabs

Hail, yes!
The state Senate gave the green light last night to Mayor Bloomberg's hard-fought plan to allow a new class of metered cabs to pick up street hails in the boroughs outside Manhattan.
The new taxis would begin operation on Jan. 15, assuming Gov. Cuomo signs the legislation.
Except for their color, to be decided, they would be identical to yellow cabs, down to the 50-cent surcharge for the MTA.
Bloomberg insisted that the addition of 30,000 permits that would instantly legalize the livery industry -- which has operated largely illegally for 40 years -- wouldn't hurt entrenched yellow cabs that confine themselves almost entirely to Manhattan.
The mayor called the new law an "historic turning point for the riding public."

Will livery cabs now have meters? I have always enjoyed negotiating cheap fares from Harlem to Midtown.

I'd hesitate to trust these drivers who've been ripping people off for years. While a Yellow cab is expensive at least they are metered and a ride that might be 7 dollars metered the livery cabs ask for a flat fee of like 11 bucks just to go a short distance.

True, Jeffrey. However, these licensed livery drivers WILL have meters in their cars.

I know, Justin, I just have a bit of a grudge against these guys who never offered me a fair price.

Now Yellow cab is going to get ripped off, its good for the city but bad for more than 20,000 cab drivers and NYC traffic.
